Many many moons, sunsets and seasons ago, a very wise spiritual leader of an Indian nation went high into the mountains to have a vision. After several moons went by, a great spirit who was known as teacher of wisdom came to him in the form of a spider and spoke in a spiritual language that only the two on the mountain could understand.
The great spirit spoke of circles of life from very young to very old. As the spirit did this, he spun a web. When he was done, he explained how perfect the web was. He went on to say that there are good and evil spiritual forces that all people listen to. If you listen to the evil forces, evil things can happen but if you listen to good forces, good things will happen to you and your people. When the spirit was done with his talk with the Indian leader, he gave the web he had woven to him explaining that it was perfect, and the web, when duplicated and adorned with your people's precious crafts will protect them from evil spirits and prevent bad dreams from coming to the children. If you believe in the great spirit, the web can catch the good ideas and thoughts of you and your people and the bad and evil ones will go through the hole in the middle. When the great leader returned to his people, he informed them of his vision and the dream catcher idea was born.
The people of his nation crafted dream catchers and the Indian nation prospered for many, many seasons. Great care was taken with the crafting and the care of the dream catcher and it has become a sort of Indian religious object.
Dreamcatchers are handmade objects with webbing that are hung in windows for protection. Originally they had been hung in children's rooms to prevent nightmares and the legend has it that the dreamcatcher would catch the bad dreams so the child would not have them. Today, Dreamcatchers are a sort of sign of human unity and have been adopted by most tribes. They have become popular among non-natives .
So now you know the legend of the Dreamcatcher! Dreamcatchers (sometimes quoted as two words Dream Catchers) have evolved through Native culture. As time has moved forward, they have been decorated in all sorts of ways and styles since the first great spiritual leader had his vision thousands of sunsets ago.
One of the most beautiful stories in American Indian Mythology. It is said that in the night air, there are good and bad dreams -- good dreams go through the loop's web into the one sleeping, while bad dreams become hopelessly tangled in the web... perishing in the first light of dawn. Each piece has been created in this spirit in the hope that it will carry the healing powers of universal peace to the wearer. All handmade by the Sky Woman and Medwolf.

Tobacco, is one of the four sacred plants. It represents the Eastern Direction and the mind. The Anishinaabe use a form of tobacco known as kinikinik, or a red willow mix. Because it opens the door to the creator, When tobacco is used to make smoke, it is one of the most sacred of plants for Native people. Some elders say that tobacco is used to connect the worlds since the plant’s roots go deep into the earth, and its smoke rises high into the sky. This plant is highly respected and highly honoured. Giving tobacco is a beautiful way of our people. Ceremonies using tobacco invoke a relationship with the energies of the universe, and ultimately the Creator, and the bond made between earthly and spiritual realms is not to be broken.
There are four traditional Tobacco uses. None of them will harm you. Prayer
When we put sacred tobacco into our Sacred Pipes, we are also using that tobacco as a communicator to the sky world where all of our ancestors have gone on before us. We do not inhale the sacred smoke that comes from the pipe. When the smoke rises, it is taking our prayers with it up to the Creator and all of our relatives who have gone on before us. Our elders show us that when we finish with prayers, we sprinkle a small amount of tobacco on the drum. This is a way of giving back to and thanking the Creator for all he has given to us. Tobacco can be used on a daily basis as each new day is greeted with prayers of thankfulness. Many elders say to hold it in your prayers of thankfulness. They also add that you are to hold it in your left hand as this is the hand closer to your heart. Offerings
Traditionals burn tobacco before storms. It is used to pray that powerful storms won’t hurt our families. To pray with tobacco in your Native language is very powerful. It can make a difference in the physical world. Purification
Tobacco is used in the offering of prayer to the Creator, acting as a medium for communication. It is either offered to the fire, so the smoke can lift the prayers to the Creator, or it is set on the ground in a nice, clean place. It means we come humbly to our creator. We proclaim our innocence. When you want to speak to the creator, we are told to make an offering of the tobacco plant. An Elder will take tobacco ties and offer them to the fire or offer it back to Mother Earth on behalf of the Sacred Circle. Anishinabe people live life in a very sacred manner. When taking something from the Earth, they always explain to the spirit of the plant why it is being done and offer some tobacco in return for the generosity and help of the plant which shared itself so freely.
Purification and working with a clear mind and heart are essential in asking the land to provide for people. This is keeping with the Native belief that if you do things in a good way, good things will follow. If careful attention is not established, the result will not be as good. Sometimes elders place tobacco on the water. This shows our thanks to the Creator, for the lifeblood of our Mother the earth that is provided to us. At this time we also acknowledge the moon who in her 28-day cycle cleanses the water by filtering it through the sands. Respect
Respecting our tobacco should be taken seriously. Sacred tobacco is used for prayers of gratitude to thank the Creator of Mother Earth for our many blessings, such as good health, great fishing, and good crops. When any plant is picked or any animal is taken, Tobacco and Prayer must be given to show respect. By honouring all our relations we demonstrate that we have not forgotten our place within the web of life. To offer someone tobacco is to ask that you and the person receiving the tobacco be of one heart, one mind and one spirit. Tobacco is offered when you ask someone to do a ceremony for you, such as a name-giving, drumming or singing for someone, to do a smudging ceremony, a sweatlodge or sacred pipe ceremony; any ceremony. This signifies that you and the one doing the ceremony are of one heart, one mind and one spirit, that you have the same purpose.
Another way that is used to bring people together in unity is that it is used to heal rifts between people. If you have a disagreement that causes ill feelings or someone has treated you badly, or if you have treated someone badly, you can bring tobacco and ask to speak to the person. Then of course, you would do your best to heal the rift, not to make things worse, so tobacco assists us in making amends, getting over resentments, healing emotional wounds and in forgiving people. Even a little tobacco can be given if you do not have money for a pouch. It is the sacredness that counts, not the amount. The person can decide to accept your tobacco or reject.
Some of our Elders still offer tobacco to everyone who visits them. Tobacco is given to elders when one is seeking advice. It is always good to offer tobacco when seeking knowledge or advice from an Elder or when a Pipe is present. It shows gratitude and respect for the elder whose advice you are seeking. Tobacco is given when you appreciate a teaching from an elder or even a younger person if you value what that person has told you. It is a way of showing respect and gratitude.
Sacred herbs are powerful, but when misused or dis-respected, their power consume us. Tobacco can be a healer or a destroyer. It depends on how and how often it is used. When used in a sacred way, it can promote good health and assist with spiritual guidance and growth. When tobacco is used in a protocol way it becomes sacred. In the old days, tobacco was the most holy of plants and the most sacred of ceremonial objects. The Creator's spirit is in tobacco. When used in this sacred manner with the sacred pipe, the spirit as smoke enters the man, refreshes him, and then travels to the sky laden with thanksgiving. For hundreds of years, the people were taught this holy and powerful way to communicate with their creator. If used correctly, tobacco can improve your spiritual, mental and physical well being. Cedar Cedar represents the Southern direction and the soul. It keeps bad energy out of the circle. The leaves are cleaned from the stems and separated into small pieces, which are used in many ways. When burned, cedar acts as a purifier, cleansing the area in which it is burned and emitting a pleasant scent. True cedar is burnt while praying to the Great Mystery in meditation, and also to bless a house before moving in. Cedar was offered to the fire to smudge the lodge and people. It is also used to waft the smoke to ward away sickness. In traditional medicine, a compound decoction of twigs was made into an herbal steam for rheumatism. It works both as a purifier and as a way to attract GOOD energy in your direction. Elders say put some in you shoes and only goodness will come your way. Many traditional women keep some cedar in their left pocket. When you breathe in the smell of cedar you decide that you're going to have courage and stamina and that you're going to survive. You think of what the herb means, why it was given to us … It's not magic. Sage
Sage, is used in much the same ways as Cedar. It is burned as a purifier, but when compared to the "piney" scent of cedar, sage has a spice air. Sage represents the Western direction and brings good spirits into the circle. Sage is used by the original peoples to make their prayers, to signal the creator of one's need for help. There are many varieties of Sage and all are effective in smudging. Smudging is a way of using the smoke from burning herbs to cleanse the body, an object, or a given area of negative influences. Many Red nations used varieties of sage for medicinal purposes as well as religious ceremonies. The burning of Sage in smudging ceremonies is to drive out evil spirits, negative thoughts and feelings, and to keep negative entities away. The root was used by the Ojibwa in three ways: as an anti-convulsive, on wounds to stop bleeding, and as a stimulant. The Potawatomi burned the plant to smudge and also used it as poultice on long-standing sores. Sweet Grass
Sweet Grass is used to cleanse the mind, body and spirit. It is considered sacred because it is symbolic of purification. It represents the Northern direction and the body. The elders tell us that scent of these natural herbs is pleasing to the creator and will incline him to hear the ceremony with favor. The smoke is considered distasteful to all evil beings and thwarts their powers. This plant plays an important part in ceremonies of spiritual significance. When Sweet Grass is used in ceremony, each person is to fan the sweet grass smoke, first to their head, second to their heart, third around their body and lastly, to their feet. The prayer said during this process is: "Great Mystery, please cleanse me of my negativity and fill me with the positive energies of love, so that, as I am healed so may I work for the healing of our Earth Mother."
Because it signifies the hair of Nokimis Akiin (Our Grandmother the Earth) it is usually braided. Each of the three sections that go into the braid have a specific meaning, being mind, body and spirit. Because the Anishnaabe people live life in a very sacred manner, when taking something from the Earth, they always explain to the spirit of the plant why it is being done and offer some tobacco in return for the generosity and help of the plant which shared itself so freely.
Many sacred and cultural objects are made with Sweet Grass. The Men’s grass dance outfits are symbolic of the sacred plant. A braid of sweet grass was traditionally tied to the dancers' belts. The colorful yarn or fringe that sways from their regalia symbolizes sweet grass swaying in the wind. Weengush is also used to make coiled baskets, called unity baskets. These Unity baskets are not for sale. It is said that in the old days very small ones kept children's navel cords. Sweet grass is a very powerful herb. Unity
The elders tell us that "Sweet Grass is the hair of our Mother, each strand alone is not as strong as when braided together." The braid represents to us the great strength a united tribe has opposed to a divided one. Gratitude
Our sacred plants have a special role to play in our lives. We need to keep the idea of gratitude ever present in our mind. We cannot keep our NDN worldview alive without fully appreciating the concept of gratitude. Proper use of our sacred plants helps us to convey the meaning of gratitude. Whenever we take something, we must remember to give. We must be able to be grateful before receiving. To appreciate that life is a gift and that everything that comes with it – our successes and our defeats -- is truly a gift in itself. Tobacco is what is offered back to Nokimis Akiin - grandmother earth. When we find a feather or collect medicines, we take them with us as a gift from her. We offer tobacco. When we hunt animals, we offer tobacco to the earth and to the chief spirit (Manitou) of the plant or animal we're asking to give of itself. We also offer tobacco when we cross a river, before thunderstorms when someone dies, when we see an eagle. This idea of gratitude is what binds us together as native people and keeps us strong. The four sacred herbs complete the cycle of life. Their smoke is used to cleanse the mind, spirit, body and soul. They can remove negative forces and refresh us.

In the long ago times women would make clay pots and would go down to the creek beds and gather shiny stones with which they would go round and round the pots in order to make the pots smooth before firing them in a pot firing pit...these stones have been collected from just those ancient pits in Saskatchewan..it is in the way of my people a fact that stone takes in good energy and women also in the long ago times prayed as they went about there work..and in those times when men went off to hunt it is also true that sometimes they did not return..so men would sneak a stone when no one was looking and place it in a leather pouch close to there heart knowing that the power of the womens prayers through the stone would guide them back to there village always...

Not long ago I sat by a fire. I looked deep into it's coals
and out of the coals came a blue shape, it was the shape
of a man. As it became more clear I could make out it
was the spirit of a Cree elder. "Tansi," he said in a quiet
voice. "Welcome to these sacred moments, some call me
Dancing Spirit." "In reality I am a walker in the dream
world and have seen that which lies beyond the eyes of
dreamers."
"I have seen with the far sight.""I have looked into tomorrow."
"I have seen people eating from garbage."
"I have seen others feeding on rats and each other."
"I have seen the earth shake and the sky circles become
in line."
"I have seen the rain drops turn to stone."

"I have been a defender of the sacred Mother Earth and
in turn she has shown me those places that will be
safe."
"I have taken time to learn the language of the animal
nations; they are already gathering in the sacred
places."
"I have traveled in the dream world and sat at the fires
of the Ancient Ones who drink from the sky lakes and
know the songs that will save the children."
He said, "Gather the true believers that have chosen to
live with earth. You are to look into your hearts and
remember the old ways."
"You are to become earth beings once again."
"You are to remember the places where Creator keeps
the healing plants."
"You are to remember how to make flour from cattail
roots."

tobacco."

cherry bark."

and make the medicine that heals your wounds."
"You are to remember to harvest the acundimow and
make the medicine that revives the hearts of elders who
carry the gifts of age."
"You are to remember the medicine of birch leaves."
He said, "Remember the medicine of wild berry leaves."
"Remember the medicine of wild clover."
"Watch your brother the bear and learn from him."
"Watch your brother the wolf and learn from him."
"Watch your brother the beaver and learn from him."
He said, "Locate the high ground where the Little People
gather, for it is such places where the water will not
reach."
"Build your home into the earth where the Old Cold one
cannot reach you."
"Learn the ancient ways of preserving food."
"Learn the old ways of making fire."
"The old ways must now become the new ways if you
are to survive the coming of earth changes."
He said, "Gather the Rainbow Tribe of the new
millennium and guide them to a survival area."
"I can only say what I believe is right."
"I am but a tiny spark in the winds of change, little time
is left."
He said, "If somewhere in these words our hearts have
met I am glad, for something sacred has come to pass."
He said, "To non believers the high ground holds nothing
but emptiness; they are fools, for it is everything and is
the place where the All Knowing Ones gather; where our
animal brothers speak in the sacred language that our
ancestors once understood in the long ago times."
He said, "I have been given the medicine to speak the
words and so I will say them until the last eagle flies."
"I will say the words until the Little People speak and
awaken the Sleeping Giants."
"I will say the words for it is the sacredness of words
that will give birth to the tribe that will know the way
back to who we are."
He said, "To those who question why I have come to this

have come to share the truth with those who have the
ears to listen."
He said, "I have come to share tobacco with my brothers
and sisters."

smoke."
"I have come because I have chosen to live with Earth."

Medwolf~in the moon when healers gather spiritual power
It was going to be a cold night out on the land...I
built up the fire and laid down beside it...
All day I had tracked the two lost boys....I knew now
I was very close and would find them in the morning
as they had stopped running....
I stared into the fire wondering why lost people
always run....The fire became a green dancing flame
to my tired brain....I closed my sleepy eyes and could
see her....A little girl in a beaded dress sitting on the
ancient praying stone which is part of a medicine
wheel near my camp....
She held a braid of sweet-grass and looked to the
sky worlds....She said, "Hear me elders...
I am the spirit of the strings of time....I have come to
this place and time because the willow trees are
crying...
At one time when mother earth wore the smile of a
young woman....elders used to tell us things and
shared their knowledge beside the teaching fires....
Now the elders are gone....victims of bingo hall spirits
they dwell in the arms of casino magic....
No longer do they prepare the young for their journey
into tomorrow....No longer do they care that we
are dying with needles in our arms....No longer do
they care that babies are being eaten by the concrete
jungles....Elders, I burn this sacred medicine for
you....Elders, hear me mother earth is dying, the
greedy ones are killing her....
Elders, please, when earth is gone you also will be
gone....Elders, you must help us,you must show us the
medicine that will save mother earth....
Elders, listen to me, I am the spirit of the warriors
heart....The wolves are gathering in the secret places
of the four leggeds, and I have come to run with the
pack....I am tired of hiding in bottles of tricksters
medicine ....I am tired of dying with shame in my
heart ....I no longer like it that the innocent ones fear
my foot steps....I have come to take the first shock
and buy time with my life so that maybe, just maybe,
mother earth will heal....Elders, where are you....who
will prepare me for battle....
Elders, where are you hiding??? Who will guide my spirit through the fires of the ancient ones....
Elders, help me....Who will pray for me when I drink the sacred water from the big dipper....
Elders, why have you deserted us...
Elders, leave the shiny coins to the lost ones,
mother earth doesn't except credit cards....Elders, we
need you....Please come back to us...Elders, don't be
afraid...We will teach you....Elders, I am the spirit
of the forgotten ones who live beyond your vision, and
steal time from the big clock....
Elders, I am the spirit of yesterdays children...I was sent to this place by the forever healing ones...
I carry sweet-grass, it cleans my spirit,I carry
sacred sage, it brings good spirits around me,
I carry sacred cedar, it keeps bad things away,
I carry sacred tobacco, it takes my prayers up
to creator....
I come from a time when we were strong,
I come from a time where elders are real,I come
from a place where those who carry the gift of age
share their thoughts,I come from yesterday, a time
when our mother was not dying....
Where are you, elders of this place....Why do you embrace
the games of trickster....
Can you not see the children's pain...Can you not feel the tears in the wind....Can you not feel their tiny lives slipping away...
Hear me elders,
I am the spirit of the rainbow tribe,my father was
a soldier who has seen this world through the eyes of
a white wolf,My mother was a pow-wow dancer
who seen all things through the eyes of a soaring
eagle...
I am a mixed blood, I am metis and I have come to
teach you how to walk on the clouds,I have come
to help you to hear earth breathing...I have come to
help you to love the rain,I have come to share the
heart beat of my people, for we are children of the sky
and earth, our basket also is filled with good dreams...
I have come to teach you the dance of friendship, and to let you know that your struggle is my struggle, until forever ends....
Elders, hear me, I am the spirit of the missing ones,I live in the shadows of your dreams,I have friends who no longer
walk in your world, they stopped breathing when the dark one touched their innocence....
Where were you in our time of need...Where were you
when we had no place to hide....Elders,you must share
this burden,it is our blood on your hands, your silence
is your acceptance....
Elders, you didn't kill us, but you let it happen,we died for your sins, like that white medicine man Jesus...Elders, those alive still need you, don't let our deaths be for nothing...
Elders, look inside your hearts, remember how it felt
to be mother earths children, remember elders, all you
have to do is remember".
I awoke and looked around me,all I could think of was, what a powerful place I have chosen to place my camp...
Medicine Wolf~in the time when the Rainbow Tribes hear the whispers from the sky...
Once I found a stone in one of the places where ancient giants sleep...
when I first picked it up there was a puff of smoke and the spirit of an Ojibwa
elder came out of the smoke...he greeted me, he said, "I am called Fire
Keeper...many snows have come and gone since I began to walk the
medicine trail." "I find myself living in peoples dreams and standing on the
edge of their visions, warning them of the confusion soon to come." "I have
learned the language of the other side and sat by the dancing flames with the
old Great Ones." "I have cut my flesh and let it bleed in order to bring the
madness where truth hides," he said. "I have come to say that Earth is
dying." "I am one of her many warriors and I have come to trade my
understanding for the time she needs to heal herself."
He said, "Why have you come?" "Have you come to this sacred place
because your struggle is the same, or will you take the easy road and join
those who are the cause of the pain felt by Mother Earth?" He said, "The
warrior road is a hard road, it is much easier to cut down the sacred tree
and collect money for material possessions." "It is easier to cut wounds into
Mother Earth and trade shiny stones for a place within lost societies where
ignorance rules." "It is easier to fill the wounds of Mother Earth with
poisons in order to grow better crops that are horded and not shared with
the starving." "It is much easier to do nothing and more profitable to join
the madness." He said, "I ask you, what good is a pocket full of coins when
the store shelves become empty and food can no longer be purchased?"
"What purpose will gold have when Earth dies and life fades from the
sacred circle?"
He said, "People must gather now and prepare for the first shock." He said,
"I will now share with you what I see when I walk in the dream world." "
You who come to the sacred fire must now learn the ways of those who
came before you!" "You must thank Creator for this day and the struggle it
will bring, for it is those struggles that will make you strong." "You must
thank Creator for the rain that makes the plants grow and for the warm
breeze that blows." "You must learn the sacred path and become wise in the
ways of your ancient relatives." "You must find the keeper of the sacred
arrows." "You must taste the mysteries of Earths magic." "You must come
to understand that all things have purpose, respect the power that lives
within." "You must ask Creator to bring wisdom in all the things that you
hear." "You must ask Creator to guide your thoughts while you search out
your path of truth!" "You must help the Rainbow tribe to speak as one and
respect all things that live." "You must come to know why wolf does not kill
wolf and spotted eagle does not feed on her relatives." "You must never
forget to offer tobacco to Creator, then to Earth, and then the four
directions!" "You must gather strength to face the visions, the bite of
hunger, the cold, and the trickery of the forked tongues!" "You must learn
to be hunters again and never forget the old or the poor." "You must seek
out that place where grandfather sun hides in the heart of the world, where
the great spiritual ones dwell for they hold the laws of all there is." "You
must learn to see that which is beyond your eyes so that you will come to
respect the unknown!" "You must avoid the ways of those who turn the
rivers and cut the sacred Earth for their time within the great circle is soon
to end." "You must ask Creator to help you see through the eyes of great
white bear so that you might know the many events that are to come." "You
must avoid the evil ones drink and know where Trickster hides his snares!"
"You must avoid the Dark Rider for he is the shade of bad times." "This
being is not of our spirit and brings great suffering." "You must ask
Creator's help in protecting the young, the old and the weak, for this vulture
hungers for their souls and will come to carry away the unprotected!" "He
travels in many forms, sometimes diseases, sometimes in the white powder
that makes slaves of the four colors of our relatives." "You must have ears
to listen to the wisdom that lies within the voices of those who have visited
the other side!" "You must learn to speak the old words with a brave
heart." "You must learn to understand the howl of the wolf nations and
scream of sister eagle!" "You must not forget the dance of friendship and
it's beat on the sacred drum!" "You must learn to make the eagle bone
whistle and know why the old ones carry sacred elk teeth!" "You must ask
Dream Maker to help you to dream the sacred dreams that will fill the
emptiness in your heart and guide you through the confusion that is coming
soon." "You must climb Holy Mountain and make allies with your sky
relatives, for it is they that see all things that are above and below!" "You
must thank Creator for the new born, for the young who will make our
nations strong; for the elders who know where we must place our feet in
order to walk in a sacred manner, and for our allies who have much to
offer." "You must keep your heart pure so that you never stray from the
sacred path." "You must come to accept that you are but a tiny spark in the
in the winds of time, that you stand before Creator as a child, and you must
send your voice to Creator with sacred smoke!" "You must feel shame
before Creator for the times you have quenched your thirst from the dark
ones bottle and found yourself lost among the tears of losers!" "You must
feel shame for the times you have offended Creator by swallowing Tricksters
medicine when life was not easy to understand and the weak ones feared
your footsteps!" "You must feel shame before Creator for the times you
revealed your veins to the razors edge in dreams where you hid from
reality!" "You must feel shame for the times you have forgotten how to walk
on Mother Earth!" "You must all feel shame before Creator for Sacred
Earth is dying and you are letting her die!" "It is time to offer tobacco to
Creator for the gifts given to the four colors of people!" "It is time to offer
tobacco to Sacred Earth for the life she has given to all the living!" "It is
time to offer tobacco to the one who dwells in the East where red stone lives
and all healing begins!" "It is time to offer tobacco to the one who dwells in
the West where fresh water is shared with all life!" "It is time to offer
tobacco to the one who dwells in the North where great white bear watches
over sacred medicines!" "It is time to offer tobacco to the one who dwells in
the South and sends you warm breezes!" "It is time to ask Creator to notice
you in your time of need!" "It is time to address the one who is the maker of
all things and is older than all prayer!" " It is time to stand before the one
whom all things belong to the two leggeds, the four leggeds, the winds of the
air, and all things that live!" "It is time to address the one who gives life to
the sacred circle, forgetting nothing, including the stars above and the grass
under your feet!" "It is time to send Creator a voice for we are a people in
deep despair!" "It is time to know the spirit shape of life as it was meant to
be!" "It is time to defend our Mother…"
The spirit elder then smiled and with a puff of smoke
he disappeared once again into the rock……..
Medicine Wolf……..In the time before the Great Confusion
